How does it work?

iPass forms relationships with ISPs around the world that have the highest quality Internet access networks and that provide access in far reaching locations. iPass provides special dialup software to Stargate that enables these access networks to be available to you. This software facilitates secure routing of user authentication requests over the Internet between Stargate and other providers.

When you travel outside of our regular service area, you can dial into any of the worldwide iPass access points using your iPass connection software. You will log in with your standard username and password. Your username should be in the form of username@stargate.net. Your authentication request will be encrypted and sent over the Internet to the Stargate authentication servers. The server will check your information and send an authorization response (or denial if appropriate) back to the ISP you are dialing into so that you can gain access to the Internet. This process takes about five to ten seconds, slightly longer than dialing up to your home Stargate number. iPass tracks the time you are connected to enable Stargate to accurately bill you for services used.

The iPass connection software also checks for updated phone number lists each time it connects, ensuring that you always have the most current information.

All you need is a Stargate dialup account and the iPass connection software. The iPass connection software is available for Windows and Macintosh. Stargate provides this software at no additional cost. You maintain one account with Stargate, continue to use the web browser and email program of your choice and always use the same username and password. Customers with email addresses that do not end in @stargate.net, @sgi.net, or @stargate.pitt.edu, may need to contact us to enable their account for iPass.

How much does it cost?

The iPass connection software is a free download and users are not charged unless they use the software to connect.

The price for iPass is variable by region. Roaming charges are significantly less than long-distance charges. The best way to view the pricing information is to download and install the iPass software. When you select a roaming POP, the hourly rate will appear with the phone number. You will be charged by the minute (not by the hour). Most major U. S. cities cost approximately 5-6 cents per minute, and many major European cities range from 10 cents per minute to approximately 30 cents per minute.

The charges for the iPass Global Internet Roaming service will be on a billing period basis and will be combined with any other Stargate charges you incur.

What should I do before I leave?

There are three important things to do before you travel:

  • Test the connection software: Follow the instructions for installing the iPass Dial Wizard and test its operability before you begin travelling. This will ensure that you have the most up to date phone number list before you leave, and it will also confirm that you have the software configured properly - decreasing the possibility of long distance calls to technical support! We recommend testing more than one access point before you leave. Please remember: Stargate cannot be responsible for any long distance charges that you receive using the iPass connection software - please verify that the number that you use is a local call from the location you are dialing from.
  • Understand that modems function differently worldwide: Many countries have different telecommunications laws and practices. Check with your modem supplier to ensure your modem will be compatible with the phone systems in the country where you are traveling. Many older modems are not compatible from country to country. Make sure that you also have compatible electrical power adapters for the country where you are roaming, in some countries, you may also need telephone line adapters. For comprehensive information about international phone systems, or to purchase the adaptors you will need while traveling, please visit: http://www.shop.teleadapt.com/.
  • Update your iPass connection software: Before you begin roaming, make sure that you are using the most recent release of the iPass connection software. The current version for Windows is 2.10, and the current version for Macintosh is 1.8. To determine the version of the software you are using:

Windows: Click the Help menu and choose About iPassConnect.

Macintosh: With iPass open, click the Apple menu and choose About iPassConnect.
