DSL Modem Status Lights
To verify that your CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) is functioning properly, it is important to check the status of the LEDs. LEDs indicate whether the DSL is training up to the DSLAM (WAN-side LEDs) and passing traffic in addition to whether or not it is working on your network (LAN-side LEDs). Be aware that things like line noise, bridge taps, cross-talk can impede the line.
This page contains some information that may assist you in using LEDs as a means to identify and resolve a problem:
- LEDS: Basic Troubleshooting - Things to try when LED status indicates a problem.
- LEDS: Status Indicators - LED quick reference for modems used by Expedient customers.
LEDS: Basic Troubleshooting
Tip: If the status of the LEDs indicates a problem, try powercycling the equipment.
See LEDS: Status Indicators below for information on LED status. If the status of a LED or LEDs is abnormal, some things to check are as follows:
- Power LED: Check that the power cord is securely installed at both ends. Test the outlet to verify power; try another outlet. Unplug the unit and reapply power. Try replacing power supply. There may be a hardware problem.
- Ethernet LED: If the status LED for the Ethernet is abnormal, there is a problem between your computer and the DSL modem. Be sure you are using the correct cable (straight-through or cross-over), that the cable is firmly connected at both ends of the connection. See Basic Hardware Configuration and your DSL modem/router documentation for information. If you are using a hub or another device that is between the DSL modem and computer, check to make sure your cable or DSL modem is plugged into the corresponding port at the back of the router. You may want to remove the device temporarily to test. The problem may be with your Network Interface Card. See Network Interface Card (NIC) for more information.
- Line Sync LED: If the LED that indicates Line Sync is abnormal, the link between your location and the phone company's Central Office (CO) is not working. Make sure your cable or DSL modem is powered on. Verify that the line has dial
tone; plug a phone into the jack and dial 811 and listen for a
voice message with the phone number. Is the modem plugged into the proper jack? Try another jack if unsure. Is the cable between the modem and the wall plugged into the correct jack? Be sure you do NOT have a microfilter installed between the modem LINE jack and the wall jack.
If the Line LED is on but there is no data transmission, verify the Ethernet connection. See DSL Link not established for more information.
