SonicWall: Does not resolve DNS through a PPPoE connection

Problem:
SonicWall hardware firewalls will not resolve DNS through PPPoE connections.

Reason:
In order to register their SonicWall product (must be done to be eligible for technical support from SonicWall) or to enable SonicWall's Anti-Virus capabilities, the SonicWall product MUST be able to resolve host names. This does not happen by default setup methods using Expedient's PPPoE.

Solution:
Configure the Westell (517) DSL modem as follows:

  1. Create a standard connection to Expedient.
  2. LAN Advanced:
    IP Address: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    DNS: [Leave as defaults]
    DHCP: DISABLE
    Static NAT: DISABLE
    LAN PC IP Address: 192.168.0.10
  3. Establish a connection to Expedient

Configure the SonicWall firewall as follows:

  1. Enter SonicWall config-->General Options-->Network Tab
    • Network Addressing Mode: NAT Enabled
    • LAN Settings: SonicWall LAN IP Address: 192.168.0.10 (or however you have your NAT configured)
    • LAN Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    • WAN Settings: WAN Gateway (Router) Address: 192.168.0.1 (MUST match Westell IP)
    • SonicWall WAN IP (NAT Public) Address: 192.168.0.10 (MUST match Westell's LAN PC IP setting)
    • WAN Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (Must match Westell Subnet)
    • DNS Settings: Specify correct DNS for your area. See DNS Servers

This will allow SonicWall to resolve DNS correctly.
