Westell 2100 PPPoE Setup with and without Linksys

Step 1: Configure your hardware

Step 2: Install filters

Step 3: Configure your computer network settings

Step 4: Configure the Westell 2100 modem - brouter configuration (brouter = bridge router; functions as router and bridge)
For a bridge configuration, click here

Home Networking: Click here if using the Westell 2100 with a Linksys Router

Westell 2100 FIREWALL CONFIGURATION

The Firewall capabilities built into the Westell 2100 DSL router are enabled by default and set to "Medium" security. If certain programs (e.g. AOL, ICQ, MSN Messenger, etc.) do not function properly after connecting to the Internet, lower the security settings.

To lower the security settings of the firewall:

  1. Open the Westell interface by opening a web browser and typing 192.168.1.1 into the address bar. Click the Go button or hit the enter key.
  2. On the Configuration menu, select Firewall Configuration. Set the configuration to "Low" or, if necessary, disable the firewall. Click here for a screenshot of the firewall configuration page

Westell 2100 BRIDGE CONFIGURATION

The Westell 2100 DSL modem is able to handle your PPPoE connection, eliminating the need to use PPPoE software, such as WinPoET or MacPoET. However, if you need to configure the Westell 2100 as a bridge (e.g. NPTCO customers or customers using Native PPPoE or PPPoE Software), please refer to Westell 2100 Bridge Configuration

Install filters

To eliminate the problem of line noise, telephone filters have been provided to you as part of your modem kit. Each filter should be connected between your telephone jack and any device using the phone line, such as fax machines, digital cable boxes, satellite receivers, and cordless phones. DO NOT PUT A FILTER BETWEEN THE WALL JACK AND THE DSL MODEM as this would filter out the DSL signal.

Additional Filters: If you are using a Westell modem, please visit www.westell.com to purchase filters online. If you are using a Paradyne modem, visit www.expedient.net and complete the "contact us" form. Please be sure to include the number of filters you require.

Configure your network settings

Before you begin...

Changing the Windows Network settings may require the original Windows installation CD or disks, or Windows system source (cabinet) files on the computers's hard drive. Expedient cannot be held responsible for any problems with the Windows Network configurations if these items are required but are not supplied at the time of configuration.

After you have finished installing your hardware, you will now need to add the following network settings to your computer. Select your operating system below:

Windows 98 and Windows ME
Windows XP
Windows 2000
Windows NT
Macintosh OS X
Macintosh OS 8-9

Configure the Westell 2100

INITIAL setup:

  1. Bring up a Web browser and type http://dslrouter or http://192.168.1.1 in the browser's address window. The Getting Started screen will appear. Click Next and type in the account parameters.

    • Connection Name - Expedient
    • Account ID - Expedient username in the format username@dsl.stargate.net or username@expedient.net
    • Account Password - Expedient password

Click Next for parameters to take affect or click Reset to re-enter parameters.

  2. Enter the VPI and VCI with 0 and 35 respectively and click Next.

  3. Select PPPoE as the Protocol type and click Next.

  4. The Set-Up Complete screen appears. Click Done.

  5. At the prompt to reset the modem so that the changes will take affect, click OK. A screen appears that indicates the modem is resetting.

  6. To set the DSL to connect automatically, you will need to Edit the configuration: Click the Profile Editor link, and click the Edit link for your Expedient DSL connection. Select the Always On radio button, verify that the Save Password option is checked, and click the Save button.

EXISTING setup:

  1. Bring up a Web browser and type http://dslrouter or http://192.168.1.1.

    1. Select New Connection to establish a NEW user profile

    2. Select Edit from the Connection Overview screen to make changes to an EXISTING user profile.

Click here to see the fields that are available when the Edit function is selected

Connecting and Disconnecting

Bring up a Web browser and type http://dslrouter or http://192.168.1.1. The Westell HOME page will appear. View the Connection Rate field. This screen shows the connection rate (transmission speed of DSL line) with values that indicate a successful SYNC has been established. The router may take time to report the values. If the field reads No DSL Connection, check the DSL physical connection (hardware installation).

Connecting
Click Connect. The PPP Status field will display Connecting.... Once a PPP session is established, the status will display UP.

Disconnecting
Click Disconnect on the Connection Overview screen to terminate the connection. A pop-up screen will appear: "Do you want to disconnect the PPP session?". Click OK. The PPP Status field will display DOWN.

Home Networking: Westell 2100 and Linksys Router

The client machine can be configured to obtain an address automatically since both the Linksys router and the Westell modem have DHCP enabled by default, but it is recommended that you configure TCP/IP manually.

  1. Connect to the Linksys interface through 192.168.1.1

    • WAN IP: 192.168.0.10. This address must match the address specified in LAN PC IP Address for the Westell 2100 configuration.

    • Device IP: 192.168.1.1 (default).

    • DHCP enabled. (default)
