Home Networking: Configure the Westell 2100 as a bridge when using a Linksys Router - PPPoE connections

Install filters

To eliminate the problem of line noise, telephone filters have been provided to you as part of your modem kit. Each filter should be connected between your telephone jack and any device using the phone line, such as fax machines, digital cable boxes, satellite receivers, and cordless phones. DO NOT PUT A FILTER BETWEEN THE WALL JACK AND THE DSL MODEM as this would filter out the DSL signal.

Additional Filters: If you are using a Westell modem, please visit www.westell.com to purchase filters online. If you are using a Paradyne modem, visit www.stargate.net and complete the "contact us" form. Please be sure to include the number of filters you require.

Configure your network settings

After you have finished installing your hardware, you will now need to add the following network settings to your computer. Select your operating system below:

Before you begin...

Changing the Windows Network settings may require the original Windows installation CD or disks, or Windows system source (cabinet) files on the computers's hard drive. Expedient cannot be held responsible for any problems with the Windows Network configurations if these items are required but are not supplied at the time of configuration.

Windows 98 and Windows ME
Windows XP
Windows 2000
Windows NT
Macintosh OS X
Macintosh OS 8-9

Configure the Westell 2100 as a Bridge

To configure the Westell as a bridge for natted (non-PPPoE) connection, access the Westell interface by launching a web browser and typing http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar.

  1. On the Configuration menu, select VC Configuration. Click the Edit button for the top entry. Set the Protocol from PPPoE to Bridge. Leave other settings as they are. At bottom, click the Set VC button.
  2. On the Configuration menu, select DHCP Configuration. At the top of the window, change the setting for DHCP Server from Private LAN to Off.
  3. On the Configuration menu, select Private LAN Configuration and uncheck the top box labeled Private LAN DHCP Server Enable. Do not change the 2nd checkbox, Private LAN Enable.

With this configuration, you will not be able to access the Webshare interface, although configuring the client with 192.168.0.10 will enable you to access the interface again from the client.

Multiple clients can be connected to a hub which is behind the Westell 2100 operating in a bridge capacity. PPPoE software on the client machines can establish multiple sessions providing (a) you have an appropriate port limit set up on a single account or (b) you have multiple PPPoE accounts.

The client machine can be configured to obtain an address automatically since both the Linksys router and the Westell modem have DHCP enabled by default, but it is recommended that you configure TCP/IP manually.

Home Networking: Configure the Westell 2100 as a bridge when using a Linksys Router
  1. Convert the Westell 2100 over to a Bridge configuration.
    1. Go to Maintenance > Backup / Restore
    2. Hit the third restore button to reset the modem to the factory defaults.
    3. You are taken back to the Setup Wizard.
    4. Enter a name for the connection, leave the un / pw fields empty, specify the vpi/vci, then choose bridge as the protocol.
  2. Connect the Westell 2100 to the phone line and the DSL router

  3. Configure the NIC on one of the wireless computers. You can either obtain an IP automatically or set a static IP. If you set a static IP use the following settings:
    • IP: 192.168.1.5
    • SM: 255.255.255.0
    • GW: 192.168.1.2
    • DNS: 209.166.161.121 and .120 (pgh), 208.138.204.22 and .21 (erie)

  4. Connect to the router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer
    • Do NOT enter a username at the login screen (leave blank)
    • Type admin for the password
    • Make the following changes under the setup tab
      • Set the protocol to PPPOE and enter the UN/PW
      • Change the IP of the DSL router to 192.168.1.2
      • Save the changes and close the browser
