Westell 517: Reset the modem

If you use a Westell 517 modem, any interuption in the PPP connection will result in a lock-up of the built in client. When this occurs, the PPPoE session remains, but the modem's software will not pass traffic to the WAN side, producing a "no route" issue. This is corrected by resetting the modem and re-configuring Webhsare then re-establishing the PPPoE session.

Reset the DSL modem by turning off the modem for 3 seconds. Power the modem back on then restart the computer. To start over and set the router to factory default, push the reset button with a pen or something small enough to go through the hole for 3 seconds or until the red diagnostic light comes on, then restart the computer.

Using a PC based PPPoE client such as WinPoet or RasPPPoE will also alleviate the problem Another workaround is to configure the modem as a regular bridge and use a PC-based PPPoE client or native PPPoE, since these applications can detecta nd handle the fault, and automatically re-establish connectivity.

  1. Insert the Westell Webshare CD

  2. Click through the initial install until prompted for the Function Selection

  3. Select IP Reset Utlility for Webshare and click Next.

  4. Click Default Reset. This will set the Westell 517 back to default values and should be accessible through a web browser at http://192.168.0.1, provided the client is configured correctly.

  5. This also enables DHCP and disables Static NAT. Reconfigure the modem to enable NAT and disable DCHP after performing a Default Reset.
