Problems accessing websites

If you are connected but cannot access websites:

If you are able to get to non secure (http://) websites but NOT secure websites (https://), such as those used for personal account pages for online banking, Amazon accounts and similar sites:

  • Be sure your browser is 128 bit encryption. Go to Help on the menu and select About to determine the encryption level.
  • If you use Windows XP, refer to the Microsoft KB article 813444: HOW TO: Troubleshoot Situations Where You Cannot Connect to Secure Web Sites by Using Internet Explorer in Windows XP. A summary of steps from the article is as follows:
    1. Delete Temporary Internet Files
    2. Configure Security, Content, and Advanced Settings in Internet Explorer
    3. Verify That the Date and Time Settings on Your Computer Are Correct
    4. Verify That Your Computer Is Using 128-Bit Encryption
    5. Use System Restore to Return Your Computer to a Previous State
    6. Check Third-Party Firewall or Antivirus Programs
    7. Use the System File Checker (Sfc.exe) Tool to Verify Protected System Files
    8. Verify That the Microsoft Cryptographic Services Service Is Started
    9. Register .Dll Files
    10. Create a New User Profile
