FTP Client: WS FTP

WS_FTP is a popular FTP client for Windows. The 32-bit LE (light) version is freeware and can be downloaded from our download page or from download.com (search for WS_FTP)

  1. Open WS_FTP. On the Session Properties windows and click the New button.
  2. Enter an appropriate name for the Profile Name - e.g. name of your domain.
  3. Enter your ftp server name into the Host Name/Address: field - e.g., ftp.mydomain.com. Note: Do NOT precede the host with an "http://".
  4. Set the Host Type:to Automatic detect.
  5. Enter your username and password into the User ID: and Password: fields respectively. If you want to save your password, place a check in the Save Password check box.
  6. The Account: and Comment: fields can be left blank.

  7. You may specify the directories that WS_FTP starts in by using the Startup tab.

  8. Click OK. The FTP program will now connect.

  9. In the right-hand window (remote system - server) double-click the public_html directory to open that directory. In the left-hand window (local system), select the name of the file(s) you wish to upload then click the right-arrow button in the middle column of the FTP window.

WS_FTP will begin to upload the file. If you do not see your new file in the right-hand window after uploading, click the Refresh button beside the right-hand window.

  10. If needed, set/change permissions (chmod). To use a site command like CHMOD, right-click on a file. When a list of commands appears, choose CHMOD and enter a new value for the permission settings of your files.

Troubleshooting

WS_FTP - Receive error: blocking call Canceled
If you find that Passive Transfers is enabled, you should disable it and if it is disabled, you should enable it.

Starting with WS_FTP version 6.50, this option is ENABLED by default and is found in the Connection Properties window. (In WS_FTP Pro versions prior to 6.50, this option is DISABLED by default and it is found on the Session tab of the Options dialog box.) You can also increase the Network Timeout setting to 120.

If you still receive this error after making the above changes, try to connect to the ftp server using command line FTP at a DOS prompt. If you can connect see how long it takes. Once you know how long it takes to connect, enter this time into the Network Timeout setting on the Advanced tab of either Session Properties (classic interface) or Site Properties (Explorer interface). See WS_FTP - Multiple PORT command errors; WS_FTP - What is the "Passive Mode" option
