In order to connect your computer to the network successfully, have these things on hand:

  1. An Ethernet card
  2. A 10Base-T category 5 Ethernet cable (the ends of the cable resemble phone jack connectors but are wider)
  3. The manual for your Ethernet card
  4. Drivers for the Ethernet card, which can be found on the floppy disk or CD that came with it
  5. For Windows Users: your Windows CD
  6. For Macintosh Users: a Mac OS system CD, to start up from if your system fails.
  7. If your Mac didn't come with a system CD, make a Disk Tools disk.
  8. A transceiver (for AAUI Ethernet Macs only)

Installing the Ethernet Card

If you require an authorized technician, please contact your computer vendor. You can also stop by or call Computer Showcase. See Campus Resources for contact information. NOTE: Some manufacturers void the warranty of your computer if an unauthorized person opens your computer. If you choose to install the Ethernet card yourself, refer to the manual that comes with the card for installation instructions. Remember to install the software on the disk that comes with your Ethernet card. You may need to restart your machine once you finish.

Connecting to the Wall Jack

Once you have installed the Ethernet card and its software, you're ready to connect your computer to the Ethernet wall jack with your Ethernet cable. The instructions below apply to most wall jack connections. The Ethernet jack is wider than the phone jack.
  1. Push one end of the 10Base-T Ethernet cable into your computer's Ethernet port until it clicks.
  2. Locate the Ethernet jack next to the phone jack on the wall and insert the other end of the 10Base-T Ethernet cable into the Ethernet jack. Please see our online Troubleshooting Guide.

Color-coded Jacks
In all halls except Rose, the white jack is for phone; the blue jack is the first data connection; the yellow jack is the second data connection. In the Rose hall only, there are two blue jacks in this building for data, the first blue jack on the left is the first data jack and the blue jack on the right is the second data jack.
