SMTP Authentication
SMTP Authentication allows the mail server to identify and confirm that you are to be allowed to send mail through our mail server. For many customers, it is required that you enable SMTP Authentication so you can send email to others. Unfortunately, many older email clients do not support this option. Information on how to configure the most commonly used email clients for Windows and Macintosh that support SMTP Authentication is below.
|
Netscape and Mozilla users may experience difficulty sending mail, due to the fact that these programs auto-detect the presence of SMTP authentication and, if detected, attempt to use it. To eliminate any problems, please follow the instructions on this page.
Netscape 4.7x users: If you use Netscape version 4.7x, a bug in the program prevents the password from being saved for SMTP Authentication. To eliminate retyping your password each time you send mail, you may want to either (1) upgrade to the recent version of Netscape or (2) disable SMTP authentication. To upgrade, go to Netscape to download the program; to disable SMTP Authentication, click here for instructions.

Configuring your Email Client for SMTP Authentication
Note: These instructions assume your email client is already properly configured to access your Expedient email.
|
Important note about configuring your email program to use SMTP Authentication for your Expedient email
If you have non-Expedient email accounts, we recommend that you configure ONLY Expedient accounts in your email software or use Identities or Profiles (Outlook Express/Netscape/Eudora) to avoid problems that may result with your other email accounts when configuring SMTP Authentication for your Expedient email.

Email programs that do NOT support SMTP authentication
SMTP Authentication is NOT supported in older email programs such as Netscape 3.x, Eudora 3.x or Eudora Lite. If you do not use one of the versions that support SMTP Authentication, you will need to upgrade to a higher version or send mail out through the SMTP mail server of the Internet Service Provider that provides your connection (if it is not Expedient).
To upgrade the most common email programs, some links are provided for your convenience: Outlook Express/Internet Explorer -- Netscape -- Eudora.
Note that when upgrading, most programs will keep your settings and messages; however, there are no guarantees that nothing will be lost so we recommend that you back up your messages and address book prior to upgrading.
