DSL Authentication Errors
Authentication for broadband users takes between 1-5 seconds. If you are having problems authenticating, please note the following:
Error 691: Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain
Error 718: PPP Timeout
Check your username and password. Your username should be in the form of username@dsl.stargate.net or username@expedient.net and should be in lower case letters. Note: If you use a D-Link router, type your username before the @ symbol.
All passwords are case sensitive so be sure that you are entering your password with the proper case and that the caps lock key on your keyboard is not ON. Re-enter your password to be certain it is correct.
Error 718 can also indicate a problem with the physical connection.
Error 734: The PPP Link Control Protocol was Terminated
[Westell 2100]
If you reset the Westell 2100 modem by using the reset button or going to "Maintenance > Backup/Restore > Factory", the default becomes "Current Configuration" and an error 734 may result when attempting to authenticate again. The problem occurs because the Westell 2100 does not disconnect the session before resetting.
[Windows 2000, WinPoET]
If you use Windows 2000 and WinPoET software, be sure there are no protocols or services bound to TCP/IP that is used by the DSL connection. Try removing the WinPoET dialer from the desktop and recreating a connection in the "Network and Dial-up Connections" with the proper configuration. Also, try lowering the encryption level under the Security tab of the DUN item.
Problem with Network Interface Card (NIC) / Ethernet Drivers
While most NICs work relatively well with DSL, some may be less compatible than others with any Service Provider, not just Stargate's DSL service. Check for updated drivers for your network interface card. The following NICs may not work well with Stargate's DSL: 3COM OfficeConnect, Network Anywhere, Home Network, Office Network, Network LAN, Office Net, Home Net, Fast Ethernet, Linksys Network Everywhere.
Note about WinPoET Storage of Username and Password
A corrupt file (.pwl) will not cause an authentication problem as is sometimes the case with a dial-up connection. The username and password for WinPoET is stored in the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - Ivasion - Winpoet - Connection. When the password is cleared, the value in the registry changes and is set to whatever is typed in when the program is closed.
