Configure your network settings
After you have finished installing your hardware, you will now need to add the following network settings to your computer. Select your operating system below:

Changing the Windows Network settings may require the original Windows installation CD or disks, or Windows system source (cabinet) files on the computers's hard drive. Expedient cannot be held responsible for any problems with the Windows Network configurations if these items are required but are not supplied at the time of configuration.

Configure the Westell 517
The Westell 517 DSL modem is able to handle your PPPoE connection, eliminating the need to use PPPoE software, such as WinPoET or MacPoET. However, PPPoE software can be used and the Westell 517 can be configured as a bridge.
- Open Internet Explorer (or another web browser) and enter http://192.168.0.1 into the Address field and press Enter on the keyboard. You should see a screen similar to the image below. If you do not see this screen, check to ensure that your network settings are configured properly.
- Click the New... button to configure a network connection. You will see the screen shown below.
- Enter Expedient for the connection in the Description field. Enter your PPPoE username and password into the User ID and Password fields. Your username should be in the form of username@dsl.stargate.net or username@expedient.net.
- Check the option Save password and enable Auto-Reconnect.
- Click Advanced. Select the radio button to Disable DHCP. The Static NAT radio button should be enabled by default. The address listed in LAN PC IP Address must be the IP address configured on the client (computer). Default values should not be changed unless you have a reason for doing so. The VPI and VCP must be set to 0 and 35 respectively.
- Click Save. The modem will prompt you that it needs to reboot. The interface will come back up when the modem is back online.
- The newly created account will appear in the main screen. Click Connect. If Save Password is checked, the Westell 517 will persistently try to establish a connection.
- The modem will attempt to connect to the Expedient Network.
- Once you connect, the PPP Status screen will turn green.
If it turns red after attempting to connect, check your username and password by editing the account you created.
If using a Linksys router...
The client machine can be configured to obtain an address automatically since both the Linksys router and the Westell modem have DHCP enabled by default, but it is recommended that you configure TCP/IP manually.
- Connect to the Linksys interface through 192.168.1.1
- WAN IP: 192.168.0.10. This address must match the address specified
in LAN PC IP Address for the Westell 517 configuration.
- Device IP: 192.168.1.1 (default).
- DHCP enabled. (default)
In a bridge configuration, the Westell 517 is configured NOT to establish a connection. (Note: This configuration will only bridge PPPoE traffic; it will
not bridge static traffic). With no router involved, a PPPoE session can be established on the client via Native PPPoE (Windows XP, Macintosh OS X) or PPPoE software (WinPOET or MacPoET). The DNS must be configured on the client.
With this configuration, you will not be able to access the Webshare interface, although configuring the client with 192.168.0.10 will enable you to access the interface again
from the client.
Multiple clients can be connected to a hub which is behind the Westell 517
operating in a bridge capacity. PPPoE software on the client machines can establish multiple sessions providing (a) you have an appropriate port limit set up on a single account or (b) you have multiple PPPoE accounts.
The client machine can be configured to obtain an address automatically since both the Linksys router and the Westell modem have DHCP enabled by default, but it is recommended that you configure TCP/IP manually.
If using a Linksys router...
After configuring the computer network settings and Westell (see Configuration Quick Reference at top of page), configure the Linksys:
- Connect to the Linksys interface through 192.168.1.1 The LAN IP of
the router is set to this by default. PPPoE can be established via the
Westell -OR- via the Linksys Router. See below for details.
PPPoE established via Westell Select
Specify an IP address for the WAN IP and enter the following:
- IP: 192.168.0.10
- MASK: 255.255.255.0
- GW: 192.168.0.1
- DNS: 209.166.161.121 - 120
NOTE: The IP specified here must be the IP address specified in the
'LAN PC IP Address' filed on the Westell modem.
PPPoE established via Linksys Enable
PPPoE by selecting the radio button and enter your login/password
as username@dsl.stargate.net/password.
Disable DHCP DHCP is enabled by default. It is
recommended that this be disabled unless you have multiple clients that you
want to manage this way. Click Disable. If you wish to use this feature,
make sure there are no static assignments in the DHCP scope.
