Determining the program

In most cases, the desktop or program file icon you click to launch the program will show the name of the program. Some programs have a "splash" screen that appears before the program opens that indicates what program is opening (like Internet Explorer 4.5 or Netscape Communicator). If you cannot get program information from the icon or splash screen, open the pogram and look at the "Title bar" at the top of the main program window. Still no joy? Use the "About" (below) to determine the program name AND the version of the program.

Determining the program -and- version number

Windows

Click the Help menu when the application is open and choose About Program Name. For example, if you are using Netscape you would click the Help menu and choose About Netscape. A window will pop up which provides you with information, including the version number of the program.

The "About" information screen for some programs lists files of different version numbers - just ignore those. The version number for the entire program will be listed somewhere near the top or upper portion of the screen.

Macintosh

Click the Apple menu when the application is open and choose About Program Name. For example, if you are using Netscape Communicator, you would click the Apple menu and choose About Netscape Communicator.
