Cancelling AOL

HOW TO TERMINATE YOUR AOL ACCOUNT

Switching Internet Service Providers shouldn't be difficult, and hopefully this step-by-step guide will allow you to make a seamless switch from AOL to Expedient:

The first step is to set up your new account with Expedient so that you can let your friends and family know your new email address. You should do this before you cancel your AOL account. To sign-up, please feel free to call our sales department at 1-877-570-7827.

Before you cancel your AOL account, you will probably want to get the email addresses out of your AOL address book. Unfortunately, there is no way to automatically switch your email addresses from AOL to the email client you use with Expedient (like Outlook Express, Netscape or Eudora). The easiest way will be to send an email from your AOL account to everybody in your address book and also enter your new Expedient email address in the To field. You can use this email to let your friends and contacts know that your email address has changed and to ask them not to use your old AOL email address any more.

When you receive your copy of the email in your Expedient account, you can enter your friends addresses by doing the following:

    For Outlook Express

Double click the email message to open it in another window. Double click each email address or name, and click the Add to Address Book button. You can then edit the address book entry. Click OK. You will need to do this for each contact in the email message.

    For Netscape 4.x

With the email message open, click the Message menu. Choose Add All to Address Book. Each contact will pop up individually allowing you to edit the information before it is added into the address book.

    For Netscape 7

With the email message open, click each email address and choose Add to address book. If necessary, edit the information then click OK. You will need to do this for each contact in the email message.

For all other applications: Please refer to your email clients help files.

For information about removing your contacts, old email messages, and favorites lists from AOL, please view the following article by CNET: http://www.cnet.com/internet/0-3762-8-7585117-1.html. Note: Expedient neither supports nor endorses the software suggested in this article.

Once you have all of the information out of your AOL program, you will want to Cancel your account. Here are some tips to help you cancel your AOL account: For the most up-to-date information about canceling an AOL account, use AOL Keyword CANCEL in your AOL software.

To cancel your AOL membership by phone, dial 1-888-265-8008.

To cancel by mail:

    America Online
    PO Box 1600
    Ogden, UT 84402

Or you may fax your request to AOL at 801-622-7969.

If you choose to write or fax AOL, you will need to include the nature of your request (cancellation) and your full name, phone number and address. Additionally, for account security purposes, you will need to include ONE of the following:

  • The primary Billing Contact's AOL screen name
  • The last four digits of the current payment method used for this account (for your security, only the last four digits please)
  • The answer to your Privacy Question (if you have already established a Privacy Question and Answer).

Your AOL cancellation request should be effective within 72 hours of receipt, and AOL should send you written confirmation.
