Modem keeps dialing or just says Dialing

If your modem keeps dialing or just says "Dialing" but does not negotiate:

Check your dialing properties and location

Check the dialing properties and location the connection is set to use in the dial-up networking folder and the modem control panel.

Use Hyperterminal

You might also try to dial using Hyperterminal to determine whether the problem is in the dial-up networking connection or not; if you can dial using Hyperterminal but not the connection, this indicates a problem with the dial-up connection.

Check winsock

It's possible that you have the incorrect winsock file as some programs overwrite the Windows version or that the winsock/wsock32.dll file(s) have become corrupted. See winsock/wsock32/winsock 2 for more information. If you have to extract these files, use the System File Checker in Windows 98 or the System Configuration Utility in other Windows. If you require more information on these files or file extraction methods, check Microsoft or your Windows offline help.
