How to check or change the modem port speed

Refer to the Modem Port Speed Table below for the port speed you should be using for your modem. Note that the port speed should never be set lower than the speed of the modem.

Modem Speed Port Speed
14.4k 19200 bps
28.8k 38400 bps
33.6k 38400-57600 bps
56k 57600-115200 bps


To check or change this setting, follow the instructions below for your operating system.

Windows 98 and ME

  1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  2. Double click the Modem icon.
  3. Click the Properties button.
  4. On the General tab, check the speed listed in the "Maximum speed" drop-down menu. Change the speed if necessary.

Windows 2000 and XP

  1. Double click My Computer.
  2. Double click the Control Panel.
  3. Double click Phone and Modem Options.
  4. Click the Modems tab.
  5. Click the Properties button.
  6. On the General tab, check the speed listed in the "Maximum Port Speed" drop-down menu. Change the speed if necessary.

Windows NT

  1. Double click My Computer.
  2. Double click the Control Panel.
  3. Double click the Modems icon.
  4. Click the Properties button.
  5. On the General tab, check the speed listed in the "Maximum speed" drop-down menu. Change the speed if necessary.
