Install the VPN Client

To install the Cisco VPN 5000 client after you have downloaded the installation file:

Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, & XP

Before installing a newer version of the VPN client for Windows, you must uninstall any older versions from your computer. You can do this through the Add/Remove Programs option in your Control Panel.

Please note that you may need Administrator privileges to install the VPN client in Windows NT, 2000 & XP.

  • Double click the downloaded file to begin the installation process.
  • If you cannot find the file that you downloaded, do a Windows Search (or Find). The file name should begin with "vpn-5000-win".
  • You should be prompted to restart your computer when the install finishes.
  • If you do not see the VPN Client on the desktop, you should be able to find it by clicking the Start button, then VPN 5000 Client, and VPN Client.

Macintosh OS 8-9

  • After the installation completes, you should be prompted to restart your computer.
  • After the computer restarts, open your hard drive, then open the VPN 5000 Client folder. You can then create an alias on the desktop for the VPN Client application.

Linux

The following VPN client for Linux installation instructions have only been tested on RedHat Linux 7.3, kernel 2.4.18 (redhat package 2.4.18-19.7.x). You may need to adapt the following instructions for your distribution.

The VPN client installation program requires the kernel source code for your linux distribution. Verify that you have this source code before you begin installation. Installation of kernel source or RPMs in general is beyond the scope of this document.

Download the vpn client. It is recommended that you download the 3DES high encryption version. The file name should be vpn-5000-linux-5.2.8-3des-k9.tar.Z

After downloading the VPN client, move it to the /usr/src directory.

mv vpn-5000-linux-5.2.8-3des-k9.tar.Z /usr/src

Uncompress the file with gzip.

gzip -d vpn-5000-linux-5.2.8-3des-k9.tar.Z

Next, untar it with tar.

tar xvf vpn-5000-linux-5.2.8-3des-k9.tar

Change to the COMPvpn directory that has been created.

cd COMPvpn

Run the install script.

./vpn_install

You will now be prompted for install directories, and the location of the linux kernel source code. It is recommended you answer as follows:

Directory where binaries will be installed [/usr/local/bin] - Select the default.
Directory where libraries will be installed [/usr/local/lib] - Select the default.
Directory containing linux kernel source code [/usr/src/linux-2.4] - Select the directory where your linux kernel source code is located.
Select network device [eth0] - Select the default unless you have more than one ethernet card. For multiple ethernet cards, select the card that communicates to the WAN, not your local LAN.
Automatically start the vpn service at boot time [yes] - Select the default. This just starts the service. It will not connect automatically at boot time.

After answering these questions, you will be shown your choices to review. Verify the settings are correct and confirm.

The installation program then builds a kernel module and installs the necessary files. You will now need to configure the /etc/vpn_config file.

Choose your company or school affiliation for VPN Configuration and connection instructions. If your company or school is not listed below, choose General Setup Instructions.
